School Budget Uncertain as Deadline Looms

Lewiston City Councilors get their first look at the proposed $73.6 million school budget. Superintendent Bill Webster laid out the plan Tuesday, according to the Sun Journal. Uncertainty remains in the final numbers while Maine's state budget remains in flux.

 

Name Suggestions Needed for Consolidated City

The Lewiston-Auburn Joint Charter Commission is taking suggestions for the name of the proposed consolidated city on its website over the next six weeks. In a Tuesday press release, the commission says it wants the name to reflect the Twin Cities' history and heritage. The name is one of several steps left to get the issue on November ballots in both cities.

Construction Closes Auburn Road Wednesday

Perkins Ridge Rd. is scheduled to be closed today between Jackson Hill Rd. and Garfield Rd. City officials say culverts are being replaced along the stretch of roadway. Drivers can use Hotel Rd. or a combination of Garfield, Center Minot Hill, Cross, and Jackson Hill roads to get around the closure.

Convicted Felon to Be Re-Sentenced

37-year-old Brian Mulkern was sentenced last year to 15 years in prison for a 2014 burglary in Winthrop. During that sentencing, Mulkern was incorrectly classified as an armed career criminal. That decision was vacated Friday, meaning Mulkern will be re-sentenced in the 6-7 year range.

Jay Woman Steals Friend's Car

Police say 18-year-old Brittany Dakin of Jay allegedly took a vehicle from a Farmington garage last week without the owner's permission. The keys had been left inside the vehicle. Dakin and the owner apparently know each other, but a relative of the owner reported the vehicle stolen.

 

Former Mill's Hydro Plant Sold

Madison Paper Industries says it has sold the hydroelectric dam and power plant to New Jersey-based Eagle Creek Renewable Energy. The sale clears the path for redevelopment of the former mill site, which closed in May after nearly 40 years in operation. The mill itself was sold in December to a joint investment group.

Formatting Error Could Cost College Federal Grant Money

UMaine at Presque Isle recently submitted two applications for a 2017 grant competition. Federal education officials refuse to review the applications because they are not double-spaced. The school was not allowed to correct the formatting error. Maine's congressional delegation is petitioning Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to reverse the decision.
